For a heaven-sent day in the nearby hillside, escape the hectic energy of the Eternal City. Exploring the papal palace and manicured Barberini Gardens, as well as participating in a hands-on cooking lesson where you’ll master age-refined recipes originating from the papal estate, is all part of our special collaboration with the Vatican Museums.
The most charming resort in the Roman countryside, Castel Gandolfo, benefits from an outstanding location overlooking the fantastically azure volcanic lake. In the first century AD, the emperor Domitian constructed a vacation home here, the ruins of which are now part of the Pontifical Villas estate. On this fascinating day excursion, learn what drew them to the area.

Castel Gandolfo's Pontifical Villa is increasingly open to visitors. After the Barbering Gardens were open to the public and the Pope's portrait gallery opened in the Vatican Palace, even the most privately reserved areas of the Pope can now be admired and enjoyed by pilgrims and tourists. From bedrooms to private chapels, from libraries to dens, many of the special places of the Papal apartments are open to visitors along the extensive exhibition routes devised, arranged, and managed by the Vatican Museums.
